The style in fashion

The term “style” has more than one meaning. In this post I am not going to talk about style in the sense of taste in something. I am going to talk about an artistic movement. The style, de stijl in Dutch, was created in Netherlands in 1917. De stijl is also called neoplasticism and the works of art of de stijl artists are abstract and visually very minimalistic. The artists use primary colours and black and white, one could find vertical and horizontal lines in their art. One of the most famous artists of this artistic movement was Piet Mondrian whose name was used for a autumn 1965 collection by Yves Saint Laurent that were inspired by modernistic artists and Mondrian´s de stijl paintings were among them.

Umělci používají základní barvy a černou a bílou a horizontální a vertikální linie.

The Mondrian inspired dresses belong to iconic garments of the history of fashion. They are knee-length A-line dresses with black horizontal and vertical lines on white background and some of the blocks are filled with primary colours (red, blue, yellow). This shape of dresses became fashionable in 1960s and is often connected to the mods subculture.

And because we all know that the fashion repeats itself, therefore we could have seen de stijl once again on runways in fall/winter 2011 collection of Prada (video from 3:59) but also recent spring/summer 2015 Balmain collection could have been inspired by de stijl (the used colours and lines are reflecting de stijl aesthetic). Also the colourblocking trend of 2011 could be perceived as de stijl inspired. And what about you? Do you like de stijl in fashion?
